第三节:阅读理解

A

As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.

Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”

The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”

31The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to _________.

Ashow the relationship between parents and children

Bteach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table

Creport on the findings of a study

       Dgive information about family problems

32Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ____________.

Athey are busy serving food to their children

Bthey are busy keeping order at the dinner table

Cthey have to pay more attention to younger children

Dthey are tired out having prepared food for the whole family

33By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children _________.

Ahave to help their parents to serve dinner

Bget the least attention from the family

Care often kept away from the dinner table

Dfind it hard to keep up with other children

34Lewis’ research provides an answer to the question _________.

Awhy TV is important in family life

Bwhy parents should keep good order

Cwhy children in small families seem to be quieter

Dwhy middle children seem to have more difficulties in life

35Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?

AIt is important to have the right food for children.

BIt is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.

CParents should talk to each of their children frequently.

DElder children should help the younger ones at dinner

When I learned that my 71-year-old mother was playing Scrabble – a word game – against herself, I knew I had to do something. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against. I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 10 years to persuade her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and delivered it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure in the world of computers.

It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’ve taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She has been the one teaching me all my life: to cool and sew; to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back.

It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing(文字处理). This proved to be a bigger challenge(挑战) to her, so I gave her some homework I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces.

“Are you this demanding with your kindergarten pupils?” she asked.

“No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.”

My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy(过敏反应). For as long as I can remember, any time I called, my mother would answer. Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years.

    A. to let her have more chances to write letters

    B. to support her in doing her homework

    C. to help her through the bad times

    D. to make her life more enjoyable

49. The author asked her mother to write her a letter                .

    A. because her mother had stopped using the telephone

    B. because she wanted to keep in touch with her mother

    C. so that her mother could practice what she had learned

    D. so that mother could be free from housework

50. After the computer was brought home, the author’s father             .

    A. lost interest in cooking

    B. took more phone calls

    C. played more games
